Things to know
- JPG and lossy WebP throw away a little detail each time they are saved. PNG and BMP are lossless, so they never lose more, but the files are usually larger.
- Converting a JPG to PNG doesn't bring back detail the JPG already lost. It only stops further loss.
- JPG and 24-bit BMP can't store transparency. Transparent areas are filled with a background color, white unless you pick another.
- Camera metadata (EXIF: date, camera model, GPS location) is not copied to the new file. Photos are turned upright first, so they still display the right way.
- Animated WebP, AVIF and PNG files become a still image: only the first frame is kept.
