How to convert PNG to BMP
- Choose or drop one or more PNG files.
- Leave "Keep transparency (32-bit BMP)" off for a standard 24-bit BMP, or tick it to keep alpha.
- If transparency is not kept, pick the background color that fills it (white by default).
- Download each BMP, or all of them as a ZIP.
Where this file comes from
PNG comes from screenshots, design tools and web graphics. People convert to BMP when old Windows software, industrial or embedded devices, label printers or display firmware accept only bitmap files.
What changes in the conversion
The PNG is decoded and written as an uncompressed BMP with the same width and height.
- Kept: image dimensions. With the option on and a transparent PNG, transparency is kept in a 32-bit BMP.
- Converted: pixels are saved losslessly. Otherwise transparent areas are filled with your background color and the file is a 24-bit BMP. A color profile becomes sRGB.
- Dropped: EXIF/XMP metadata, 16-bit color depth (saved as 8-bit), and all but the first frame of an animated PNG.
The file is converted on your device. Expect a much larger file than the PNG, since BMP does not compress.
Size limits and browser notes
- Accepts .png files up to 50 MB each.
- You can convert several files at once; they download together as one ZIP.
- Everything runs in your browser, so very large files depend on your device's memory.
Works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The BMP file is written by this site's own code rather than by the browser's image encoder, so its layout is the same in every browser.
FAQ
What happens to transparency in a PNG converted to BMP?
By default the BMP is 24-bit and has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default. Tick the transparency option for a 32-bit BMP instead.
Why does a 32-bit BMP not show transparency in my program?
Some programs ignore the alpha channel in BMP files and show the transparent area as black or white. The report warns you about this. If that happens, use the default 24-bit option.
Why is the BMP so much larger than the PNG?
BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, while PNG compresses losslessly. A BMP is often several times bigger, but no detail is lost.
Will I lose any quality?
No. Both formats are lossless. A 16-bit PNG is saved as 8-bit, and a color profile is converted to sRGB.
Can I convert many PNGs at once?
Yes. The same options apply to the whole batch, and you can download a ZIP. Each file can be up to 50 MB.
