How to convert BMP to PNG
- Choose or drop one or more BMP or DIB files.
- Wait for the conversion; there are no options to set.
- Download each PNG, or all of them in one ZIP.
Where this file comes from
BMP is the native bitmap format of Windows Paint. It is also what old scanners, industrial cameras, lab instruments and embedded or legacy software tend to write, because it is simple and needs no compression.
What changes in the conversion
The bitmap is decoded and written as a PNG with the same width and height.
- Kept: image dimensions, and transparency when the BMP has a real alpha channel.
- Converted: pixels are saved losslessly as PNG, and palette or 24-bit color becomes standard 8-bit-per-channel color.
- Dropped: nothing visible. Plain BMP files carry no photo metadata, so there is usually nothing to lose.
Expect a big drop in file size. If the result has no transparency, the BMP had none to begin with.
Size limits and browser notes
- Accepts .bmp, .dib files up to 50 MB each.
- You can convert several files at once; they download together as one ZIP.
- Everything runs in your browser, so very large files depend on your device's memory.
Works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Your browser decodes the BMP, including RLE-compressed files from old Windows programs. On iPhone and iPad, Safari limits images to about 16.7 megapixels.
FAQ
Will converting BMP to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly. The conversion just stores it with compression.
How much smaller will the PNG be?
BMP files are usually stored uncompressed, so PNGs are often a fraction of the size, especially for screenshots and graphics with large flat areas.
Does it keep transparency from a 32-bit BMP?
If the BMP has a real alpha channel, the PNG keeps it. Many BMPs have 32 bits but no real transparency, and those usually come out opaque.
Does it work with 8-bit or palette BMPs?
Yes. 24-bit, 8-bit palette (including RLE-compressed) and 32-bit BMPs are decoded by your browser and saved as full-color PNGs.
Can I convert many BMP files at once?
Yes. Drop them together and download a ZIP. Each file can be up to 50 MB.
