How to convert AVIF to PNG
- Choose or drop one or more AVIF files.
- Wait for the conversion; there are no options to set.
- Download each PNG, or all of them in one ZIP.
Where this file comes from
AVIF is served by many large websites and image CDNs, so it appears when you save an image from a page that uses it. It is also an export option in tools such as Squoosh and GIMP.
What changes in the conversion
The browser decodes the AVIF and the pixels are saved as PNG with the same width and height, with no resizing.
- Kept: image dimensions and transparency.
- Converted: pixels are saved losslessly as PNG, and an embedded color profile, if present, becomes sRGB.
- Dropped: EXIF/XMP metadata is not carried over, and an animated AVIF keeps only its first frame.
Choose PNG over JPG when you need transparency or plan to edit the image again without more compression. The decoding happens on your device, using your browser’s own AVIF support.
Size limits and browser notes
- Accepts .avif files up to 50 MB each.
- You can convert several files at once; they download together as one ZIP.
- Everything runs in your browser, so very large files depend on your device's memory.
AVIF decoding needs a current browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari 16.4 or newer. On iPhone and iPad, Safari limits images to about 16.7 megapixels.
FAQ
Is transparency in my AVIF kept?
Yes. If the AVIF has transparent areas, the PNG keeps them, so cutouts and logos stay see-through. The report lists transparency under kept.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF compresses far harder than most formats. PNG stores pixels without lossy compression, so a PNG can be many times larger. The report warns when it exceeds 1.5 times the original.
Will I recover detail that the AVIF lost?
No. The PNG preserves exactly what the AVIF displays, without losing more, but it cannot bring back discarded detail.
Why does it say my browser can't decode AVIF?
AVIF decoding comes from your browser. Use a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or Safari 16.4 or newer, and try again.
Can I convert many AVIF files at once?
Yes. Drop several files and download a ZIP. Each file can be up to 50 MB.
