How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Choose or drop one or more AVIF files.
  2. Set the JPG quality (50 to 100, default 90).
  3. Pick the background color for transparent areas (white by default).
  4. Download each JPG, or all of them as a ZIP.

Where this file comes from

AVIF files show up when you save images from websites and image CDNs that serve the format, or export from tools such as Squoosh and GIMP.

What changes in the conversion

Your browser decodes the AVIF, and the pixels are written as a JPG at the same dimensions.

If your browser cannot decode AVIF, the page tells you so instead of producing a broken file. Nothing leaves your device during the conversion.

Size limits and browser notes

AVIF decoding needs a current browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari 16.4 or newer. On iPhone and iPad, Safari limits images to about 16.7 megapixels.

FAQ

Why can't I open my AVIF file?

AVIF is newer than JPG, and many editors, printers and upload forms do not support it yet. Converting to JPG gives you a file nearly every program accepts.

What happens to transparency in an AVIF?

JPG cannot be transparent, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default. The report names the color.

Will the JPG look the same?

Very close at quality 90 or higher. Both formats are lossy, so the image is compressed once more. The JPG is usually larger than the AVIF at similar looks.

What about animated AVIF files?

An animated AVIF keeps only its first frame, because JPG is a single still image. The report says when frames were dropped.

Can I convert many AVIF files at once?

Yes, as a batch with one ZIP download. Each file can be up to 50 MB.
